Subjects and students

Sessions are one-on-one and tailored to the student. Some students arrive with a list of questions and others aren’t sure where to start. I’m happy to start wherever we need to.

Subjects

Here are the subjects I tutor most often:

  • Logic and Proof Writing
  • Discrete Mathematics
  • Calculus
  • Real Analysis
  • Complex Analysis
  • Linear Algebra
  • Abstract Algebra
  • Number Theory
  • Topology

Students

I work with students at several stages:

  • Undergraduate students
  • Graduate students
  • Self-learners
  • Advanced high-school students
Library

A library to wander through

I make interactives, worksheets, and notes for my students. Here are a few favorites; you can visit my library for the full collection.

  • Interactive · Logic & Foundations · Discrete Mathematics Functions on a Three-Element Set All 27 functions from {a, b, c} to itself, sitting at the lattice points of a 3×3×3 cube. Toggle a property (bijective, constant, idempotent, a fixed point) or group them into the seven types up to relabeling. Open ↗
  • Worksheet · Number Theory Farey Sums The Farey sum a/b ⊕ c/d = (a+c)/(b+d) and the mediant procedure that builds the Farey sequence stage by stage. Open ↗Key
  • Worksheet · Abstract Algebra · Logic & Foundations Sets and Categories Problems on products, coproducts, and universal properties, following Aluffi’s Chapter 0. Open ↗Key

About

About me

Hi! I’m Dr. Jake Herndon, a mathematician and tutor from Chicago, Illinois. I founded Herndon Math Services in 2020 and have been teaching online ever since.

I received my PhD from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2019. My research interests include geometric group theory and descriptive set theory; my thesis was on the large-scale geometry of Polish groups. You can read a PDF copy here.

Outside of tutoring, I post the occasional math video on my YouTube channel, and I volunteer with the Prison Mathematics Project, which provides math mentorship for incarcerated learners.

I also take on consulting work. If your project would benefit from a trained mathematician, please email me at contact@herndonmathservices.com.
